An infant born with a200-gram blood clot in his stomach!

Newborn baby Stomach operation

Difficult surgery successfully was done at Jupiter Hospital

Giving birth to a baby is the happiest moment in everyone’s life. March 14, 2019, came with a similar moment in the lives of Mr. and Mrs. Sakore from Shirur. The couple was blessed with a baby boy at a private hospital in Bhosari. However, just two days after his birth, the boy started bleeding profusely through a tube inserted in his nose. All efforts to stop this bleeding failed. Doctors then decided to shift the baby to Jupiter Hospital at Baner.
On being brought to the Jupiter Hospital at Baner, the child was admitted to the intensive care unit. Renowned pediatrician Dr. Shrinivas Tambe did a thorough check-up but failed to stop the bleeding. Success came only two days later when they could stop bleeding through the baby’s nose and mouth.
However, after managing the baby on ventilator support and with medication conservatively for almost 7 days, the child’s stomach appeared to be increased in size and perforated. This time the doctors decided to conduct a stomach surgery, after which they were shocked to find that the boy’s gastrointestinal parts had blasted. In addition, they found 200-gram blood and gangrene setting around this place. Doctors immediately removed the clot and re-stitched gastrointestinal part taking precautions to avoid further leakage of gastric juices and blood arriving there.
In the next 48 hours, while on a ventilator, the patient developed pneumonia in the left lung. This clinical challenge was treated very well by the team of doctors with the help of medicine. In the end, the situation was improving when on post-operation day 6, there was a fungal infection in the baby’s blood for which he was given requisite doses. Having shown improvement after 20 days of restless efforts by the doctors, the baby has been discharged from the hospital now.
Speaking about the case, Dr. Shrinivas Tambe said, “The boy’s condition was very delicate and at the same time, this case was very rare. With literally no information available elsewhere, the team of our medical experts saved the child on the basis of their experience.”
This unique surgery was performed at the Pediatric ICU of Jupiter Hospital by the team comprising Dr. Shriniwas Tambe, pediatric surgeons Dr. Pranav Jadhav and Dr. Kalpesh Patil, Aundh. The Sakore coupled hail from Shirur Talika, their main business is agriculture and are financially not very strong. They were extremely thankful to the doctors for having saved the life of their first born child. Mr. and Mrs. Sakore said, “WE were afraid to see our son bleeding through his nose and mouth.  Our financial conditions were not enough to ensure the complete treatment of our son. The entire expenditure was borne by Jupiter Hospital. We handed over our baby to the doctors with full trust in them. We are highly contented seeing our child improve after the treatment.”
